The 37th: Can Tho City-A City Eager to Attract FDI (Foreign Direct Investment)

1. Location/Population/Area:

Can Tho City is located 130 km west of Ho Chi Minh City, covering an area of 1,440 km² with a population of approximately 1.25 million.

Currently, there are 12 industrial parks in Can Tho City:

The VSIP Can Tho Industrial Park, developed by the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP), is the first of its kind in the Mekong Delta region and the 13th in Vietnam. It is funded by Becamex IDG Corporation, the VSIP Group, and the Vietnam-Singapore Urban and Industrial Park Development Company. Located adjacent to Dong Thap, An Giang, and Hau Giang provinces, it has convenient access to ports and airports, introducing Industry 4.0. It is equipped with about 9,000 communication lines, serving as a hub for industry, high-tech, and services, while also functioning as a residential area. The total area is 900 hectares, with an expected job creation of around 100,000 and an estimated investment attraction of about 3.5 billion USD, aiming to become a center for food processing and distribution in the southern region.

3. Characteristics of Can Tho City:

Can Tho City (Thành phố Cần Thơ) is the fifth largest city in Vietnam and the largest city in the southern Mekong Delta, being a centrally-controlled city equivalent to a province. It has a warm climate year-round, with an average temperature of about 27 degrees Celsius. Surrounded by canals and rich in lush orchards, it is known as the “City of Rivers.” The city boasts a rich food culture, particularly with a wide variety of fresh and affordable fruits. Can Tho is also home to Can Tho University, one of Vietnam’s leading universities, attracting excellent students from 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, making it a hub for talent.

4. Japanese Companies Operating in Can Tho City:

Several Japanese companies, particularly in the food sector, have established operations in Can Tho City, including Ajinomoto Vietnam (Hung Phu I Industrial Park).

5. Conclusion:

Due to its warm climate and abundant water resources, Can Tho City actively attracts investments in agriculture, fisheries, and food processing, as well as in healthcare, tourism, and fertilizers, driving economic growth in the Mekong Delta region.
